Truely Organic in Yorkville

The predominantly organic True Restaurant opened at 69 Yorkville last week (former home of the Sequel Lounge). With a menu of mostly locally-grown foods, True is also very true to modern, twenty-first century tastes, with its decor being very minimalist. The furniture is mostly white (swivel chairs inside, regular white chairs on the patio) with honey-coloured hardwood floors.
Its menu is Italian, serving a variety of pizzas, pastas as well as mains, such as chicken, pork tenderloin, seafoods and beef. The bread, which most people generally don’t rave about was another highlight of the meal. My bread basket included baguette, health bread and honey bread. The health bread is rye, made with bits of carrot and oatmeal. The bread is also served warm. (The manager of the restaurant, David, also works as a baker at Epi Bread (1526 Bayview Avenue), which is the bread supplier for True Restaurant.) I actually ate so much bread that I did not have room for the potatoes, which came with the main course.
I started my meal off with their apple, pear and walnut salad. Its tangy vinaigrette dressing was absolutely
spectacular with individual slices of pear and apple laid on top of a bed of greens and sprinkled with walnuts. Another wonderful appetizer to try is their mushroom soup. This creamless, vegetable based dish is light in texture, a perfect marriage of mushrooms and broth.
For the main course, I had the fillet mignon. Served on a square plate and artistically laid out, this juicy and tender piece of organic beef was grilled exactly the way I wanted, a pinkish medium, cooked but not overly-done. In keeping with the modern, health cautious clientele, the portion size was just right.
When it comes to dessert, there something for everyone at True, from pastries to ice cream to fruits. There is also an entire list of organic coffees and teas. Perhaps the only disappointment to the end of meal course is the lack of decaffeinated coffee. Maybe it’s just very difficult to find good organic decaf.
True Restaurant is located at 69 Yorkville Avenue, right at the corner of Yorkville Avenue and Bay Street. For reservations, please call 416-925-TRUE (8783).
