Well, I’ve been waiting for this for AGES. While I can’t make it to the theatre tonight, or this weekend for that matter, I am definitely going to see Sex and the City: The Movie. For those of us who love the show and watched it first-run, it’s been more than four years since we last saw “the girls.” It’s funny how many of us talk about them as if they were our best friends. We’re also quick to point out that we’re “a Miranda” or “a Carrie” or “a Charlotte.” However, I’ve never met a single woman who’d go around saying that she’s “a Samantha.” Not yet, anyway.
Reviews have been mixed. Some say that it’s nothing but a bloated episode and some seem to like it. Yet others question whether the movie’s predominantly female can really make it into a blockbuster (geez, does a movie really have to be bloody and violent to succeed?) Sex and the City is a romantic comedy. Romantic comedies generally don’t do that well in the box office, at least when you compare it to action movies. Action movies, while appealing predominantly to a male audience, often has some female following too, no matter how reluctant. Guys are less likely to agree to go with their girlfriends to a chick flick. At least Sex and the City isn’t really competing with any other opening movies this weekend. The only other wide-release opening today, at least according to IMDB, is The Strangers, starring Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler. And that movie’s publicity has been tremendously dwarfed by Sex and the City, especially with advanced tickets going on sale as far back as a month ago.
Sex and the City, no matter what people say, will do well this weekend. I know some people who are going to be driving an hour and a half outside of their hometown to catch the movie tonight. Others were not able to buy tickets, at least for opening night. For those of us who don’t get to see it until a little later, we will definitely be avoiding certain websites, so that we don’t find out the entire story. After all, we want to find out for ourselves whether it’s happily ever after for Carrie and Big.
