Welcome to the first edition of Cynthia’s Thoughts, a weekly column of what I think. Please feel free to comment!
The last time the New Kids on the Block were on a major tour, I was just a kid in elementary school. Yes, 1990. And now, the NKOTB are mounting a reunion tour. And they’re releasing a new album. I have to admit that I’ve only heard parts of their new single, “Summertime,” but it just feels so weird, like I’m a kid again. I’m probably not the only person who feels this way. I’m actually willing to bet that most NKOTB concert goers would be in their late 20s or early 30s, the same people who went to their original concerts back in 1990.
Beverly Hills, 90210 premiered on Fox in 1990. The CW network is going to premiere a new version of 90210 (it’ll be just plain 90210 this time around, rather than Beverly Hills, 90210)! This time, the central family will not hail from Minesota, but from Kansas. I guess 90210 is trying to do the Degrassi thing. After all, early 90210 (the original series) topics were more on the serious side, just like Degarssi. And a few years ago, Degrassi: The Next Generation premiered on CTV in Canada. Like Degrassi, characters from the original series will be making appearances, though so far, Jennie Garth is the only one who has actually signed on. Kelly Taylor will be a guidance counselor at West Beverly. Hmm…Kelly, a guidance counselor? Oh well, it’s probably better to have her than Donna Martin (in any case, I don’t think West Beverly would hire Donna…not after the Donna Martin Graduates fiasco!)
The NKOTB tour, 90210 premiering and the fact that there’s a guy named George Bush in the White House, I bet that if someone went to bed in 1990 and woke up today, they’d never have realized that they were asleep for 18 years! Of course, the size of today’s computers and cell phones might be a dead giveaway…
