Shimu Shai, a spa located in Corktown, just north of Toronto’s Distillery District area is run by Meredith “Lady Lamb” Mainguy. Lady Lamb came up with the name because of its “soft, soothing sound” a name that sounded like a puppy. The name also reflected the spa’s philosophy of wholesome, country freshness. Most of Lady Lamb’s treatments have ingredients are food-related, such as banana, papaya and honey, things that can be readily found at the local supermarket.
Lady Lamb on treatments at Shimu Shai:
For the most part, the treatments are facials and massages boosted with reiki energy to give the treatment a more loverly depth and energy balance. They are ritualistic in nature and clients see it as an experience. The effects of the treatments vary on different people. In addition, clients often choose treatments based on its name. It’s the vibe that gets their attention.
On what makes Shimu Shai “different”:
My treatments are holistic in nature, and the ingredients are reflective of the name. For example, Shanghai Sunset is an exfoliation made with rice bran and walnut oil, followed by a mask of kaolin clay and white tea. It ends off with body oil made with sandalwood and neroli.
On whether there’s a “typical” Shimu Shai client:
Most of my clients are “truth seekers,” not exactly the “zen” type, people interested in a “chill” environment with a country scene.
On her beauty secret parties:
Usually, these parties involve four to six people who come in to make bath bombs, skin treatments and so forth over tea and cakes. It’s a great place to have your bachelorette party!
Tips for people who want to open their own spa:
There are a lot of hits and misses. There’s a lot of research that needs to be done, and you have to devote your life to the work. Prioritizing is important as well.
Shimu Shai is located at 465 King Street East, Studio 19. For more information, please visit its website.
