Sun Damage and Cellular Repair
Cynthia Cheng
Many people today are lax about taking care of their skin. Young people, with their carefree attitudes, don’t realize that the habits they have right now may cause significant damage in the long term. According to the Center of Disease Control in the United States, skin cancer rates have increased significantly, at a rate of 2.3% every year between 1981 and 2004. In addition, there is still a myth skin damage only happens to people who are fair skinned. In reality, skin damage can happen to anyone, even people who are darker. The majority of the damage done to skin is avoidable. Only 20% is due to genetics.
The increase to skin damage is not only due to the changing environment, but also a result of changes in what is considered the “ideal beauty.” Prior to the 1920s, fair skin, especially for women, was prized, as it meant that one did not have to work. It is still the case in many parts of the world. However, once the work place shifted from the outdoors to factories and offices, tans shifted from being a sign of working in the fields to vacations in warm destinations. This eighty year old practice has certainly taken a toll.
DNA rejuvenation seems to be the latest craze when it comes to skincare. Many magazines, including the September issue of Elle Canada have discussed this. Recently, Prospere Magazine had the opportunity to speak with Bill Tomes, a skincare specialist with DermaGlow, a Canadian skincare company about their dermaDNA by Dermaglow, a company founded in 2001. DermaDNA by Dermaglow is a system that was developed to determine the type of skincare rejuvenation routine one requires by a simple test. This test, which was a collaboration of VitalScience, Dermaglow’s parent company and biotech company GGI (Genesis Genomics Incorporated), measures the skin’s mitochondrial DNA by analyzing swabs taken from the bridge of one’s nose and inside the cheek. The test is mailed to the lab, and results are available either by e-mail or regular mail in within two or three weeks. The results determine the types of products one needs to use.
DermaDNA’s Cellular Repair and Advanced Cellular Repair formulas reverse the damage done to the skin by boosting, repairing and protecting the energy of mitochondrial DNA, thus extending the life of the skin. Once it is repaired, the skin will feel much firmer. Of course, even the best formula is not as good as careful precautionary care. With disciplined use of sunscreen and prudent exposure to the sun, hopefully, any cellular repair would be unnecessary.
