Imagine stepping into a time machine and being transported to the Jazz Age. The guests at The Society Toronto’s Daisy Buchannan Affair did just that on August 14, 2008. The Royal Canadian Yacht Club’s French Colonial style architecture provided a perfect setting for the event. The light drizzle did not ruin the event at all. The venue was just shifted from the lawn to the clubhouse where we took over most of the second floor.
With the exception of a few twenty-first century pieces people had with them, such as cell phones and the DJ’s equipment, it really did feel that one was transported back in time. The 1920s is a popular theme for parties, since it gives people a chance to dress up and look glamourous, especially for the women. Some women even went all out and wore feathers along with their knee length sheaths as well as very red lipstick, a popular shade at the time. As for the men, they couldn’t have been better dressed. In an era where the sloppy hipster look rules, the guys were extremely well put-together, though it’s likely that many of the guys wore their office clothes to the event. But at the same time, men’s fashion hasn’t changed as drastically as women’s over a period of 80-something years.
In the spirit of the roaring twenties theme, this very well-organized event certainly fit F. Scott Fitzgerald’s vision and his work. Had he not been such an icon of his day, I am sure 1920s themed parties would not be as common. This has got to be one of the best events The Society Toronto has thrown this year.
That sounds absolutely lovely! I wish I could have gone.
