Restaurant Review: My Thai Kitchen

I come from a small city where variety is not the spice of life, especially when it comes to matters of the kitchen. And there’s nothing that bothers me more than a dull pallet. So when My Thai restaurant opened up downtown, I was thrilled. Finally, as restaurant with something new to offer my senses. It had everything you could ask for in a restaurant: good service, reasonable prices and of course, great food. So when I moved to Toronto a few months ago, I was delighted to be surrounded by a vast array of scents, tastes and cultures, but wondered if I would be able to find a new favourite spot to dine at. I decided to venture out in my neighbourhood one evening and see if I could find a little taste of home.
After passing several restaurants along Bloor Street I walked into My Thai Kitchen. With a brief look around and the scent of peanut sauce in the air, I knew that I had found it. But I obviously didn’t come for the ambience and was eager to see if My Thai Kitchen was more than just a “pretty face”. And boy did it deliver! Not only was the service great and the prices reasonable, but the food was mouthwatering.
On the menu that night was: sticky rice with peanut sauce, green curry chicken, spring rolls and a mango salad. The food was incredible and it’s hard to say what my favourite item was. The chicken had an intense flavour with just the right amount of heat. The spring rolls were crispy and the salad was colourful and fresh. Combined together, it offered a nice balance between sweet and spicy. There was nothing dull about this dinner and my taste buds were delighted! Not only that, but my wallet was happy as well. I dined for under $30 with enough leftover for lunch the following day.
I’ve gone back to My Thai Kitchen several times since then and I’m never disappointed. I’ve sampled the cashew chicken, pad thai and the grilled chicken. Always something new and always delicious. I thought at first that it would be hard to settle into a new area and find those elements that make it feel like home. But that’s the great thing about Toronto, there is so much variety that it doesn’t take long to get settled and move forward. So whether a native of the city or fresh off the bus, I encourage you to explore a little. Step outside of your comfort zone, and you might be pleasantly surprised by where your senses and stomach guides you.
Bon Appetite!
