Ada has been volunteering for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) since the late 1990s. At that time, Ada was an undergraduate student, studying film at Ryerson University. For her, volunteering at TIFF was part of the experience of learning about film as it offered her the chance to see uncommon films and learn more about the Canadian film industry. TIFF has also grown tremendously since Ada started. Not only are there more venues, but more volunteers! To Ada, coming back to TIFF each year is like the first day back at school – it’s something that she looks forward to at the end of August and she has a chance to see people she did not get a chance to keep in touch with!
Ada on what she likes/dislikes about volunteering:
I love it a lot! I like meeting people from all walks of life. Volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, age groups and so forth. Some people work full time and take a vacation during the film festival, others are retired or stay-at-home parents. There really isn’t much not to like – I wouldn’t have been doing this for ten years if I didn’t like it. I have been rained on a few times, though.
On what her expectations of volunteering at TIFF was when she started:
I was an undergrad when I first started. I wanted to learn about how TIFF worked, and to meet people who have similar interests. At the time, I also wanted to get more experience. I expected direction from the TIFF people, which I got. We are given information packages which tell us everything, what to do, when.
On what she does as a volunteer:
I volunteer at the Special Presentations at the VISA Screening Room at the Elgin – these aren’t galas. I mostly answer questions, act as an usher and control crowds.
On what she’s most looking forward to at TIFF 08:
To see my friends! There are a lot of returning veteran volunteers. I’m also interested in seeing the films! Volunteers get vouchers to screenings – One film I do want to see is Slumdog Millionaire.
On her favourite TIFF films (all time):
I’d have to say Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Love Me if You Dare – also known as Jeux D’enfants (2003).
Advice for future volunteers:
Come to earlier recruitment sessions, when on volunteer shift, be up for anything and wear comfortable shoes.
