Balmshell: Twin Success With Multifunction Gloss
Webitor’s Note: For the upcoming holiday season, Prospere Magazine is looking at neat gift ideas beyond just fashion and accessories.
10 lipgloss shades from Balmshell
Toronto is known to be the birthplace of many cosmetics lines, including MAC and Cargo, both of which have gone on to be celeb-favourites. But over the last couple of years, the buzz has been Balmshell. Founders Jennifer and Fiona Lees, identical twins were tired of the shiny, yet sticky lipglosses that were available in the market. They knew that something had to be done. While neither of them had any experience in the cosmetics industry (Fiona worked in advertising and Jennifer in media), their love of cosmetics convinced them that it was time for a career change.
Of course, Jennifer and Fiona had to do a lot of research prior to their official launch. The knew that they wanted a gloss that was different from what they had known before, something which was not only moisturizing and glossy, but not sticky either. With the right chemist, they soon came with the right formula. Their unique packaging, which features lip gloss on one side, and a keychain which tells a story on the other, is based on a pen they saw at a store. Each of them tells a story, based on the product’s name. For example, “Curse of the Purse,” a creamy pink gloss, features an illustrations of a woman, a man and a bag store. There are hearts around the woman, so one would think that she’s in love with the man. But no, she’s in love with the bags!
New!! Balmshell Smear, the a lip and cheek gel stain
Balmshell launched the fall of 2006 at Canada’s Holt Renfrew department store. Immediately, Jennifer and Fiona received a great deal of press. In fact, the lipglosses were featured in nominee gift bags at the 2007 Oscars. This was just a few months after they officially launched. Since then, Jennifer and Fiona have expanded beyond lipgloss. Most recently, Balmshell launched Smear Campaign, a gel-based lip and cheek stain. Unlike other stains, Smear Campaign will not stain one’s fingers as it is applied with an anti-bacterial treated sponge. In addition, it is paraben-free.
Balmshell products make amazing holiday gift. There is something out there for every type of woman out there. Since the colours generally work well on everyone, the lipglosses are based on personality more than anything. And this unique quality about Balmshell certainly differentiates them from the competition.
Balmshell products are available at select Shoppers Drugmarts, London Drugs, Sephora in Canada, at Kitson in LA and at Sephora elsewhere in the United States and Europe.
