Rethink Flappers and Rethink Pink: Rethink Romp 2009

Rethink Breast Cancer held its annual Rethink Romp on Thursday, June 11. Rethink is an organization which raises funds and awareness as well as supports younger women with breast cancer. Younger women (those under 50) have different issues than those who are older, including fertility, early menopause and financial implications. The event was held on the top floor of the Burroughs Building on Queen Street West, and boy, was the venue perfect for the 1920s/Prohibition theme. While the building itself is over a century old, it did give a feel of a speakeasy, illegal establishments which served alcohol during prohibition in the 1920s. The Burroughs Building is generally used for a gallery. In fact, there were events for Luminato, an art festival going on at the same time.
Upon entering and checking in at th entrance downstairs, attendees were handed a “hymnal” – really a piece of high-weighted paper similarly folded like old cassette tape inserts – full of 1920s phrases (including responses to 1920s pick-up lines). In addition, a lot of people, especially the women, were decked out in 1920s gear – flapper dresses and feathers were everywhere. There was also plenty of 1920s slang – the bars listed “giggle juice” as one of their drinks. The music, however, was modern. A little bit of 1920s jazz to Charleston to would have been a nice touch.
In terms of food, the servers came around with hors d’oeuvres as well as a table at the back with sweet treats from Pretty Sweet, including their signature cookies on a stick. Joe Fresh, which recently launched a line of cosmetics, was there to give mini-makeovers. Makeover corners have been very at fundraising events as of late, and have been at the past several events Prospere Magazine has covered.
The party seemed like a great success. Prospere Magazine was there early – around 8 pm – and the room was already very packed. Oftentimes, events are not busy until at least 9 pm. Of course, having an event take place on a weeknight makes a big difference. However, there were a lot of arrivals around 10 pm as well. While Prospere Magazine would have done a 1920s event a little differently (including playing some 1920s style music and offering Charleston lessons), it seemed like everyone had an amazing time. We are looking forward tothe Rethink Romp 2010.
