Kensington Market is known for its fresh produce and abundance of Chinese restaurants. During the warmer months, people flock to the Market, as it is affectionately called, to sit on patios, shop in the independent stores for unique pieces and gather some of the freshest and cheapest fruit the city has to offer. Nestled within this trendy area is Waterfalls Indian Tapas Bar & Grill. Located at 303 Augusta Avenue, Waterfalls is the perfect place for a newcomer to Indian food. The menu is populated by traditional Indian dishes, served in varying degrees of heat, and modern Indian hybrid dishes.
Shown above is the Chana Masala and Dhal curry appetizer. Served mild with freshly baked naan, it is the perfect start to the meal. The Chana Masala, a chickpea based dish, was flavourful, while the Dhal, a lentil curry, was very creamy. Both are traditional Indian fare and were spiced up by an excellent hot sauce.
The Chicken Pakoras, featured below, are much like Indian spiced chicken fingers. They are a tasty and modern appetizer for those who want to try Indian food slowly. Very mild, this is a perfectly plated treat for two.
The centrepiece of the fusion menu is the Indian style pizza. While many flavours are available, the Tandoori Chicken Pizza is a classic choice. Blending thin crust with a spiced tomato sauce and an abundance of vegetables, the pizza is perfect for those who like gourmet pizza with a touch of pizzazz. Shown below, the pizza is a large entrée that could certainly be shared by two people.
Although billed as an Indian pizza, it tastes more like an Americanized gourmet pizza loaded with toppings and some extra special sauce.
Waterfalls is a trendy place with a lot of space. You will not feel like you are crowded in this vague room with a hint of Eastern style. The ceilings are high and the tables spread out. Friday evening features live jazz from 7:30 to midnight. The drinks list is extensive with a couple of rare, foreign beers that are perfect complements to the food. The menu is moderately priced towards the higher end with appetizers priced in the $10-15 range and entrees priced in the $15-20 range. It’s a great place to end a day at the market with a pizza for two, or just a glass of wine, an appetizer and some live music.
