Last week Prospere Magazine had the opportunity to attend the Toronto Designer Collective sale at the Burroughes Building on Queen Street West. The shopping event, which was held over three days, featured a variety of local designers, including ones which have been quite established, such as Monica Mei’s Aime Luxury (her all season 2009 collection was recently presented at LG Fashion Week). In fact, shoppers were able to order pieces from her upcoming collection at the event.
Other designers included Jason Meyer from the most recent season of Project Runway Canada. The few pieces he had available (and Prospere Magazine was there early – the first day of the event, actually) were mediocre at best. They were, for the most part, black or darkly-coloured and didn’t look like they would fit well on most figures. The only piece that would remotely look good on more bodies was a denim dress. It was ugly and not wearable in the summer because the material is too thick.
Besides fashion designers, the event also boasted bags and jewellery from designers such as Cha Cha Lifestyle as well as a cosmetic line, DaLish. DaLish was unique as there were no other cosmetics brands at the event. Its booth was also placed in an amazing location, next to the doorway between the two rooms used for the sale. Therefore, it wasn’t hidden from view. A great marketing strategy.
One disappointment about the event was the lack of banks in the immediate area (there were places with bank machines, but the stores looked a little on the sketchy side). Some of the vendors did not take credit card, which posed a bit of a problem when you’re purchasing items over a certain price. However, the event was a lot of fun and a great way for designers to get exposure.
