Thirteen years ago, after one of the earlier waves of hospital “downsizing,” Karen McFarlane made a major career change. Instead of seeking work within the industry elsewhere, she decided to go into jewellery. First as a project to update her personal collection, it eventually became a line called Jewellery by Karen, which consists of necklaces, earrings, bracelets and more.
Karen considers herself a self-taught artisan. She has had an interest in art, fashion, architecture and travel has influenced and shaped her designs. Karen’s designs are all limited edition, hand-made pieces, all created to last. Considered “wearable art,” Karen’s collections range from evening and bridal pieces to daywear. Because of the style, most tend to be used for special occasions.
Launching her business proved to be a challenge. As she came from a very different industry, she had to learn new
skills, including computers. While she struggled to learn the technology, she is proud to say that she is now an expert. Karen also shoots and edits her own product images.
Publicity has been great for Karen as well. She and her pieces have made appearances in events such as the Bell Celebrity Gala and Toronto Fashion Week and in major publications like Lou Lou and the National Post.
Jewellery by Karen is currently available in many jewellery boutiques across North America. Price ranges between $80 and $1,000 for very specialized pieces.
