Nancy Rosa and her mom, Dulce, have been making dresses out of vintage fabric for more than 10 years. When people comment on Nancy’s dresses, she would always answer the question with, “my mom made that,” and thus, the line, mymommadethat was born. After all, it’s a personal line.
The line first launched this spring (April 2009, in fact), and success has come quick. Already, mymommadethat is available in several boutiques, including Frock, Shopgirls as well as stores in Lethbridge, Alberta. The line will soon make its debut in other cities across Canada.
Mymommadethat consists of knee-length dresses, and come in print as well as solid colours. The look is classical and works well with a wide demographic – it is not classical in a frumpy sense and fits great. Sizes range from small to large (apprximately a size 2 to a size 12). Since mymommadethat is vintage and locally made, it leaves little to no environmental footprint, making it a very “green” line.
Nancy has always had an interest in fashion – likely because Dulce is very stylish as well. The black and white photo of
a very well-dressed woman on Nancy’s home page is Dulce in her first apartment when she first arrived in Canada from Portugal. While Nancy was growing up, Dulce did not have strict rules about what her kids could wear - Nancy was encouraged to play with Dulce’s clothes and encouraged her to take risks with fashion. The idea of being able to take risks definitely stuck later, when Nancy grew up and started her line.
Nancy and mymommadethat will be at the Distillery District’s Portobello East Market this Sunday, July 26. If you’re going to be in the area, be sure to check it out!
