The second day of Fashion Week opened with VATA Brasil, a line of one-fits-most (size 0 to 12) athletic wear. The line, which is based out of Vancouver, was presented in a unique show featuring both traditional runway and yoga. Opening with stretching – perhaps a modified salutation to the sun, it was followed by more standard runway as well as acrobatics. The show not only featured models, but also yoga professionals, celebrities (including Amy Sky and figure skater, Josee Choinard) as well as jump rope champions and dancers. It’s interesting – when it comes to athleticwear, using “models” of different shapes and sizes seem to be more acceptable. The media aren’t as likely to talk about the different shapes (and yes, there were different shapes – some of the “models” were very obviously petite and others had atheltic bodies) with VATA than it would if other designers decide to feature different sizes.
Lizares, a line of menswear by Brian Maristela, was another line featured on Tuesday. Influenced by his Filipino heritage, some of the pieces in his Spring/Summer line are based on dress shirts of his parents’ homeland. The line also features swimwear.
Other designers on Tuesday include Jason Meyers as well as David Dixon and Barbie by David Dixon, which were held back-to-back. As Barbie’s colour is pink, the line opened with a film clip from the movie Funny Face, where Kay Thompson (yes, the same Kay Thompson who wrote the Eloise books), playing a fashion magazine editor, sings “Think Pink” to her staff. Though most of the women’s pieces seem to be wearable, the few men’s pieces seem to scream geek chic, especially when you add the Buddy Holly style glasses, checked shirts and vests.
Andy The-Ahn and Bustle also showed on Tuesday.
Wednesday’s shows: Pink Tartan, Joe Fresh Style, Paul Hardy and more.
