LG Fashion Week Day 3: African Influences, Toronto, the Adriatic Sea and More

How can a spring/summer line be so colourless? Just because it’s the recession doesn’t mean that clothing should be drab. Of course, if you’re Paul Hardy, you do have a reason. His S/S 2010 line, a collection done completely in white, was influenced by a trip he made to Uganada, where he would like to help improve the lives of marginalized women with sustainable income through production units. The white shades of the garnments perhaps symbolized a clean slate, a new start for these women. However, without this information, the meaning is completely lost, with the collection being nothing but African-influenced garments in white.
Réva Mivasagar’s Spring/Summer 2010 line is called The Urban Nomad, influenced by the designer’s first impressions of Toronto. Based on the city’s diversity, the collection features kimono jackets, Grecian gowns and is very silk-heavy. The prints in this collection are motivated by Mivasagar’s facination of First Nation art. The line, unlike Paul Hardy’s, does have some colour.
Another collection today was LOVAS Wesley Badanjak. called Mare Adriaticum, Latin for “Adriatic Sea,” was inspired by life on the coast, complete with shirtless guys and scooters. Though the collection is definitely wearable by many women, it was not very original. Many of the pieces are very similar to other designers in past seasons, most notably, Nanette Lepore.
LG Fashion Week is known to bring in up-and-coming designers from other parts of the country. Katrina Tuttle of Nova Scotia is one such designer and made her debut at LG Fashion Week today. Though her collection may have had success on the east coast, it doesn’t really stand out in this part of the country. However, she does show promise, and
