Fashion Week Day 4: Bold Colours, Alien Empresses and Soft Femininity

LG Fashion Week attendees were in for a treat this afternoon if they saw the Vibgyor (the name, pronounced veeb-gee-or, is a backwards acronym of the colours of the rainbow). Based in Mumbai, India, Vibgyor is making its North American debut in Toronto. The collection, called “Juxtapose,” was “designed for the ‘poor-little-rich-girl’ with an obsession for shopping” and consists of pieces which are ready-to-wear as well as more couture-like selections. Perhaps the most interesting piece was in the show’s finale, which has a short skirt in the front and a long train in the back.
Rain Anthology: This was a bit of a disappointment. There was very little creativity, and many of the pieces were so brightly-coloured that it was almost blinding. Also, blue and orange don’t look that great together (one dress was orange with blue ruffles). It was as if the designer, Trinidad-born and US-raised Blaine Degannes just randomly picked his colour scheme. The theme of his Spring/Summer 2010 collection was supposed to be “Feminine, not Fragile.” While the shapes were definitely feminine, the colours were not.
AIME: Monica Mei’s AIME (pronounced ”em”) known for its soft, feminine look presented a beautiful Spring/Summer collection – a first for the designer, who has, in the past, designed “seasonless” collections. Neutrals abound this show, with lots of khakis, tans, whites and blacks. Pops of other colours also appear. Though this collection was meant to be for the spring and summer, there were several pieces which were very similar-looking to ones she already has in the market.
Cheri Milaney: In March, Cheri Milaney dared to be different by presenting her Fall/Winter 2009 collection with “real women” rather than models. Though regular models were used for the Spring/Summer 2010 collection, the designer also used celebrities, including Erica Ehm and Amy Sky. In addition, unlike many other LG Fashion Week participants, Cheri Milaney targets a wider age range, especially women in their later 30s and above. The Spring/Summer 2010 colour scheme seems to be reflecting the fragrances she recently launched – topaz and amethyst abound.
Evan Biddell: The show was a little trippy at first, opening with a short film which looked like a cartoon from the 1960s. The actual runway portion also started out dark, which was difficult to photograph, but the lighting soon changed. The entire collection seemed a little bit post-apocolyptic or space-like, with veils/hoodies, baggy pants as well as flowing garments in orange, silvery-greys, whites and blacks. Evan said at a Q&A after the show that the collection was designed “for an Alien Empress.”
NADA: Called “Infatuation,” the Nada Shepherd’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection screamed vintage classy. The models, with the big, mid-1960s style hair amd big jewellery, screamed the Betty Draper-in-Rome episode of Mad Men – if they were wearing bold patterned dresses, that is. Colour-wise, it was very light or dark - lavendar, grey, light blue or dark. The lookbook also consists of a bolder colour magenta.
RUDSAK and Romona Keveza Collection also presented on Thursday.

I attended the RAIN ANTHOLOGY show and I believe whoever didn’t like this collection must be someone who is a everyday black or grey wearing person, so many people are affraid of colour that when so much of it comes at them at once it makes them want to hide………. I praise this designer for stepping out of the box of colour restriction and giving all who attended a look into what should be a brighting of fashions spirits!!!! Thanks RAIN ANTHOLOGY YOU for awaking my fashion soul!
^^^ but orange and blue, though? Together on the SAME DRESS? Prison orange? Colour is great, but not blue and orange. I think they only really work for sports teams. Even then, it isn’t the best.
