Frame: This Dubai-based label debuted its first international/commercial collection today under the theme “Heaven and Hell.” A mixture of modern middle Middle Eastern and western influences, this collection consists of flowy dresses for women (heaven), well-tailored suits for men as well as casual pieces, including denim, t-shirts as well as tight, rebel-chic pants for women (hell). With a colour range of pale pinks, whites, blacks, greys and greens, this collection definitely takes one “to hell and back.”
Brandon R. Dwyer: Project Runway Canada (Season 2) alumnus is making his debut at LG Fashion Week this season. Under a garden theme, Brandon’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection features colours such as mint green and turquoise, as well as neutrals such as grey, black and white, the shades go very well with a theme which reflects carefree, sophisticated days of garden parties and summer strolls.
Jessica Biffi: This PRC alumna had an interesting collection. With models in strange hairstyles reminicent of cartoon characters, many of Jessica’s vibrant pieces screamed 1960s space princess. Perhaps she has been taking some tips from Evan Biddell, whose collection presented the day before was “designed for an alien empress.” A favourite here is a low-cut, green flowy dress with a belt. Disappointment? The short jumpsuits!
Ula Zukowska: This was a very interesting, colourful collection. Though it started out neutral, the pieces soon progressed to a variety of different shades, including lavender and orange. In fact, a few pieces paired lavendar WITH orange tights or socks. One nit-pick: Some of the dresses, especially at the end, resembled clown outfits. Otherwise, it was a pretty good collection.
Lucian Matis: This PRC alumnus put together a very interesting collection, and an improvement from Fall/Winter (one which was nature-inspired). The headgear was very interesting (and may have brought back not-so-nice memories for people who had to wear one to fix their teeth) and didn’t ruin much of what seemed to be a hippie-meets-flapper feel. In order to enjoy this collection, one must focus on the clothes rather than the entire ensemble.
Pat McDonagh: This has got to be the best collection of the week. With fake cakes placed on the runway, many people had no idea what was going on. But then, the music started. Ba-da-da-da-da-da…a recording of Shirley Bassey singing “Hey Big Spender” from Sweet Charity blasted over the speakers as models wearing brown started to strut down the runway. Chocolate. Of course, brown was not the only colour in the collection – that would be boring. Soon after the last chocolate-coloured piece left the runway, whites and reds started appearing, representing vanilla and the berry flavours. In addition to streetwear, the collection also included beach and swimwear as well as evening. Rounding up the show was a beautiful bridal gown.
Also today: Roberto Cavalli Luxury Life Brands, featuring both loungewear/underwear and swim pieces as well as Gotstyle Menswear Made in Canada.
