Gorgeous Dresses Auctioned for a Great Cause

The first dress auction Frocktail Party was held at the Burroughs Building on Queen and Bathurst on November 12, 2009. Started by a group of friends who’ve known each other for years, the event, which consisted of a silent auction of dresses, supported the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). The JDRF was created over 30 years ago to help fund research for type 1 diabetes, an auto-immune disorder which can strike any time. Unlike type 2 diabetes, there is nothing one can do to prevent it from happening.
Typical of Toronto evening cocktail parties, the event was divided into two spaces on the top floor of the Burroughs Building. One consisted of drinks, delicious hors d’oeuvres and amazing music. There were also beauty bars – enviromentally friendly make-up artists from Agencyvert were there to give make-overs to women using Toronto’s own Cargo Cosmetics. The other smaller space was for the auction. Dresses, which were donated not only by celebrities and designers like supermodel Coco Rocha, Valerie Pringle and AIME, but also regular Torontonians, were either hung on racks or placed on dress forms around the room. Bid sheets all had photos and information regarding opening bids and sizes. The vast majority of dresses were sizes 4, 6 and 8, meaning that super-tiny people as well as people who were medium-sized or larger were out of luck.
At the end, the event was a success, raising $23,000 for JDRF. I am sure that Torontonians are looking forward to next year’s Frocktail Party!
