LG Fashion Week Fall 2010 Overlaps Two Religious Observances

AIME collection:  Spring/Summer 2010 Fashion Week

Recently, The Fashion Design Council of Canada updated their website to read that the upcoming Fashion Week starts on March 28.  Strange.  This is one or two weeks later than what’s generally been, historically – Toronto’s Fashion Week has, in the past, run over the week of St. Patrick’s Day.  Perhaps there are some venue issues.  LG Fashion Week’s spring edition, held last fall, moved from Nathan Phillips Square near the Eaton Centre to Liberty Village.  Will it still be there this time, or has building of the condo commenced, and therefore a move to another location? And what about the fact that Fashion Week is being held during a religious time of year for many people?  Are they at risk of offending some Torontonians?

March 28 is a Sunday – Palm Sunday.  Would this mean that the traditional media party, held on the first day of shows, will be held on the second?  Most people go to the event immediately after work, so holding it on Sunday might deter people who live in the suburbs from travelling downtown to attend, especially if it is in the evening.  Or will it still be held on the Sunday?  Religion-wise, it shouldn’t be much of a problem for those who plan to attend Palm Sunday services – church will likely be well out by the time the first event starts.  In addition, the day of Passover is March 30, with the first night being March 29 – this can be an issue for some who may end up debating whether to attend a media partyand then shows or go to seder.  Of course, this might mean that the media event will be held in the morning, rather than the evening.

It’s interesting to me that the FDCC would even consider the week of March 28.  Could it not be held in early April?  What about the week before?  Or do both weeks conflict with other events?  Holding Fashion Week during Passover and Holy Week is a little bit on the risky side, considering that those who have religious observances might find it a little off putting.  However, if that was the only week available due to scheduling, then it has to be.  Whether people are upset at this fact remains to be seen, as the full schedule of shows and events has yet to be posted.
