The colour scheme for VAWK’s fall/winter line lies around cream and darkness. Though there was lack of colour in the collection, the line was certainly not lack of style and design, nor was it so innovative that everyday women wouldn’t want to wear the pieces.
Featuring not just standard sized, skinny models, Sunny Fong’s line also featured two “plus” sized ladies (they were really closer to “normal sized” than what many people would consider “plus.” However, that is still a welcome change. It would be nice to see more designers feature the same thing.
Inspired by the Republic of Georgia, the show started off with some dancing from the country - the show itself was dedicated to Nodar Kumaritashvili, the Georgian luger who died in a horrific accident prior to the opening of the Vancouver 2010 Games. Much of the collection was inspired by costume from that country, with many pieces resembling the outfits worn by the dancers in the opening. The colours, which are very bright at times, may not be appealing to everyone. However, most pieces can be toned down very easily.
Jules Power was all about the classics. With toned-down fall colours, pencil skirts, jackets and dresses, her fall collection is definitely created for the every day woman - for the most part, anyway. However, there were a few pieces which wouldn’t work well on women who are not model-sized- a bit of a distraction for a collection that is not exactly “wearable art.”
Other shows on Monday were Preloved and Ryerson’s School of Fashion. The School of Fashion had a very interesting show which focused on dining and food service.
