Opinion: Good Transit Vital for a Sophisticated City

Prospere Magazine webitor-in-chief, Cynthia Cheng believes that so far, none of the major mayoralty candidates are giving off a vibe that they believe the city needs to be better polished.  Maybe they just aren’t interested in being sophisticated?

Peak Historical Gallery and Tram Video

Until the 1880s, the only way to get up to the Peak was by sedan chair.  The tram, which took three years to build, finally opened in 1888 and ran on steam engine.  In the 1920s, it was replaced by electricity.  Originally used to take British expats to their homes, today, the tram carries over 11,000 people every day.  The ride, which is extremely steep, runs backwards when going leaving the Peak.

The Peak tram lower terminus near St. John’s Cathedral is also home to the Peak Hong Kong Historical Gallery, which takes one back in time to Hong Kong’s history starting from the 19th century, before the tram was built. The exhibit also includes a display of movies which take place in Hong Kong, such as Love is a Many-Splendored Thing.  Other exhibits include a first generation tram car as well as period costume and life before the tram.

Evan Biddell Shopping Event: November 26, 2009

Season One Project Runway Canada winner, Evan Biddell (below, centre) held his “End of a Decade Sale” at Chasse Gardee on November 26, 2009. The event featured a window display by multimedia artist, Jol Thomson (see video above. Also pictured on the right below), whose show will be at the Gibsone Jessop Gallery in Toronto’s Distillery District on November 28.

Jeanne Lottie and glamjulz have teamed up to produce a bag called the “We Want It All” bag for the upcoming Pink Bedroom Party. The Pink Bedroom Party will be held at the Berkeley Church on October 1, 2009.

Prospere Magazine at Word on the Street – September 27, 2009!

Prospere Magazine will be participating at Word on the Street, Toronto on September 27, 2009.  The event will be held at Queen’s Park from 11 am to 6 pm and will feature a myriad of different publishers, magazines and just about anything literacy-related. Word on the Street will also be held in Kitchener, Halifax and Vancouver.
